Magnetic Meridian

A line formed on the earth’s surface by the intersection therewith of a plane passing through the magnetic axis. It is a line determined by the direction of the compass needle. The meridians constantly change in direction and correspond in a general way to the geographical meridians.

Magnetic Elongation

The elongation a bar of iron or steel undergoes when magnetized. By magnetization it becomes a little longer and thinner, there being no perceptible change in volume. The change is accompanied by a slight sound–the magnetic tick. An exceedingly delicate adjustment of apparatus is required for its observation.
