In dynamo-electric machines, the production of sparks at the commutator between the brushes and commutator sections. The sparks are often true voltaic arcs, and in all cases are injurious if in any quantity, wearing out the commutator and brushes.

A term for the air-gap in a magnetic circuit. It is etymologically more correct than air-gap, for the latter is often two-thirds or more filled with the insulating material and copper wire of the armature windings. (See Space, Clearance.)
